The Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS) Program was founded as a small pre-collegiate summer program fourteen years ago under the name Ivy Scholars. YYGS has now expanded to accommodate 600 participants and currently runs three distinct sessions: Politics, Law, and Economics; International Affairs and Security; and Science, Policy, and Innovation.

Summer 2014 was the first year of the Science, Policy, and Innovation session, which focuses on understanding and confronting emerging global challenges in the areas of public health, environment, and energy.

The 2012 name change from Ivy Scholars to Young Global Scholars reflects the program’s continuing mission to educate increasing numbers of international students and to expose students from the United States and abroad to global issues, international affairs, American government in comparative perspective, and policy leadership. In summer 2014, participants represented all 50 states and 80 countries. Countries represented included China, Brazil, Turkey, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Mexico, as well as Myanmar, Tunisia, Kenya, Peru, the Dominican Republic, Poland, Afghanistan, and many more.

Yale University directly administers the program through the Yale Office of International Affairs. The members of the program leadership team are all employees of the university and most of our instructional support staff are Yale affiliates, including current Yale undergraduates, recent Yale College graduates, and Yale graduate students. Those few who are not Yale degree holders have backgrounds at schools like Harvard University, the University of Oxford, and Brown University.

The program is highly selective and gives students an unforgettable summer experience. To give students room to flourish in a new learning environment and to explore new academic interests, YYGS does not offer course credit, nor do students receive any quantitative evaluation during or after the program.

The Yale Young Global Scholars Program is designed to challenge top performing high school students with fast-paced, university-level material. Prior to arriving at Yale, students are required to do several hundred pages of preparatory reading and during the program will spend the majority of each day in lectures, seminars, and small-group discussions. Participants also complete a major writing and presentation assignment in which they are asked to collaborate with a team of students. The academic work in the program is intense and each session covers a wide variety of material in two weeks.

A student in the program must have:

  • excellent academic record

  • demonstrated leadership potential

  • strong written and verbal communication skills

  • desire and ability to work cooperatively with peers

  • good work ethic

  • ability to read, analyze, and reflect on large quantities of difficult material in English

  • high standard of personal and professional conduct

Students must also be mature and able to engage respectfully and civilly in discussions over controversial intellectual, moral, and political issues.

Applicants to the program must have some high school to complete after they attend the program, and we accept applications from current high school sophomores or juniors only (or international equivalents, usually 16 or 17 years of age). YYGS does not accept applications from current middle school students (US grade 8) or current freshman (US grade 9), or from students who are under 15 years old. The program also does not accept applications from students who are current high school seniors (US grade 12), high school graduates, or college/university students.

Students who participate in the program often go on to attend very selective colleges and universities, including Yale, Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, University of Pennsylvania, Oxford, UC Berkeley, and University of Chicago.

Tuition for each session of the 2015 Yale Young Global Scholars Program is $5,250 USD, which includes instruction, housing in one of Yale’s historic residential colleges, three meals per day, linens, optional health insurance, and processing fees.

If you live in the New Haven area, you may participate in YYGS as a day (commuter) student. Please contact us for information about the tuition adjustment if you are interested in this option.

YYGS financial aid is available for students with demonstrated financial need. The application for financial aid is included in the online program application and must be completed by February 26, 2015. It is recommended that parents or guardians of applicants help students complete the required financial information.

YYGS will award financial aid based on greatest need demonstrated in your completed application. Last year, approximately one third of program participants received full or partial scholarships based on financial need. Unfortunately, YYGS financial assistance cannot cover travel expenses, and YYGS cannot guarantee financial aid to all those who apply for it.
